A warm bath is one of the ultimate relaxation rituals, washing away the stresses of the day and soothing both body and mind.
But can it also offer the grounding benefits that reconnect you with the Earth’s natural energy?
Let’s dive into the tub and explore whether taking a bath can be a grounding experience.
The Basics of Grounding
Grounding, or earthing, involves making direct contact with the Earth’s surface electrons to balance your body’s electrical energy, reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and enhance overall health.

Typically, this is achieved through 3 general methods:
- Walking barefoot on natural surfaces
- Swimming in natural bodies of water
- Using grounding products like mats and sheets.
But what about our bath water – can it serve as a medium for grounding?
The real question is if our tap water carries a natural charge that’s connected to the ground or not…
The Science of Water and Grounding
Water is a good conductor of electricity, which means it can facilitate the flow of electrons.
However, whether a bath can ground you depends on a few factors:
- Natural Water Sources: Bathing in natural bodies of water like lakes, rivers, or the ocean is indeed giving you all the grounding benefits. These natural water sources are directly connected to the Earth’s electrical field, allowing electrons to flow freely and balance your body’s energy.
- Tap Water: The water in your bathtub comes from municipal sources and passes through pipes and treatment plants before reaching your home. While water itself is conductive, the journey it takes often strips it of its direct connection to the Earth’s energy.
Putting It To The Test
Disclaimer/Warning: While using a digital multimeter is safe if done properly, DO NOT ATTEMPT this test on your own. Especially in this case, a situation involving water such as a bathtub. There is a severe danger of electrocution if done improperly.
In order to test whether soaking yourself in a bath is grounding, we need to grab a digital multimeter.
This device helps record volts, which will be a good indicator of if the bath is conducting the electrons from earths natural energy field.

First I had to get a reading of my own voltage. Which you can see above here 2.341 volts
Next I had to get a voltage reading of my body with direct contact with the water. As you can see below, the reading of my voltage dropped to to 1.614 volts.

So, what can we tell from the results?
Bathing is in fact, not grounding – and you won’t get any of the benefits of grounding.
True grounding would occur if when I made contact with the bath water, my voltage would have dropped to a number very close to 0.
Take for example, the images below.
When my body is not making contact with my grounding sheets, I have a voltage reading of 1.012 volts. While making contact with the sheets I have a voltage reading of .008 volts.
The significant drop in voltage to nearly zero shows that the electrons from the earth are passing through the sheets and are flowing through my body.

Indoor Bathing and Grounding
While taking a bath in your home may not provide the same grounding benefits as bathing in a natural body of water, there are still ways to incorporate grounding into your bathing routine:
- Grounding Mats: Use a grounding mat in your bathroom. Stand on it while you prepare your bath or place it near the tub where you can rest your feet. This can help you stay connected to the Earth’s energy while enjoying your bath.
- Outdoor Bathing Options: If possible, consider outdoor bathing options like swimming in a river/lake or even setting up an outdoor shower that allows you to be in direct contact with the Earth.
Wrapping It Up
So, is taking a bath grounding?
While our experiment exposed you don’t get the true effects of grounding from a bath, there are ways to incorporate grounding into your bathing routine.
Using grounding mats and seeking outdoor bathing opportunities can help you combine the relaxation of a bath with the health benefits of grounding.
So, draw a warm bath, relax, and enjoy the soothing experience while finding ways to stay connected to the Earth’s energy.
Happy bathing and grounding!
