Short answer: Your SaunaBox will work with any water you fill it with—but for your own health, you absolutely should use clean, filtered water.

Here’s Why It Matters

When you use your SaunaBox, the water you pour into the steamer doesn’t just sit there. It gets heated and converted into steam, which you then breathe in deeply while inside the sauna tent.

That means the quality of your water becomes the quality of the air you’re breathing. And if that water contains harmful contaminants—which most tap water does—you’re not just relaxing… you’re exposing your lungs, brain, and body to potential toxins.

Common Tap Water Contaminants

Many municipal water supplies contain trace amounts of:

  • Fluoride
  • Chlorine
  • Lead
  • Pesticides, herbicides, and industrial runoff

Normally, we talk about avoiding these chemicals when drinking tap water—but heating them into steam and inhaling them directly is an even more direct route into your bloodstream and organs.

Health Risks Backed by Research

Let’s take a look at what the science says about the risks of these contaminants:

Fluoride

“The meta-analysis found a statistically significant association between higher fluoride exposure and lower children’s IQ scores, showing that the more fluoride a child is exposed to, the more likely that child’s IQ will be lower than if they were not exposed.”

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Chlorine

“The World Health Organization (WHO) states that the consumption of water containing high levels of chlorine can lead to immediate discomfort, such as irritation in the eyes, nose, and throat, as well as stomach discomfort, which may present as nausea, vomiting, or abdominal cramps.”

World Health Organization (WHO)

Lead

“Lead can cause damage to the brain and kidneys, and can interfere with the production of red blood cells that carry oxygen to all parts of your body.”

So What’s the Solution?

If you’re using a SaunaBox, you don’t need to buy bottled distilled water for every session—but you do need to filter your water. Here are your two best options:

  • Pitcher Filter: A quality water filter pitcher (like Brita or ZeroWater) is an easy, affordable way to remove common contaminants.
  • Under-the-Sink Filter: A more permanent solution that filters water directly from the tap, providing cleaner water for both drinking and sauna use.

Final Thoughts

You filter your water before you drink it—why wouldn’t you filter the water you breathe?

Using clean, filtered water in your SaunaBox is a simple but powerful way to protect your health, maximize the benefits of your sessions, and feel good about what you’re putting into your body.

  1. So filtered water is the key. It doesnt need to be distilled.. it could be reverse osmosis or any water that has gone through the filtration process correct?

    1. Correct! Remember, most tap water around the country is contaminated. Use some form of filtration is key, that way you aren’t breathing the contaminants into your lungs once the water turns to steam. Hope this helps!
